E-steps & flow calibration calculator

Calibrate your extruder in five minutes: get the corrected steps/mm and the G-code to save it, then fine-tune flow.

1. E-steps

2. Flow rate (after e-steps)

Print a single-wall cube (vase mode, 0 top layers), measure the wall with calipers in several places.

How to calibrate e-steps

  1. Heat the nozzle to printing temperature.
  2. Send M503 and note the M92 … E value (current e-steps).
  3. Mark the filament 120 mm above the extruder entry.
  4. Send M83 then G1 E100 F100 to extrude 100 mm slowly.
  5. Measure from the extruder to the mark and enter it above.
  6. Send the generated M92 and M500 to save. Repeat once to confirm.
actual = mark distance − remaining
new e-steps = current × requested ÷ actual
new flow = old flow × expected wall ÷ measured wall

Calibrate e-steps first — it fixes the hardware. Flow is then a per-filament fine-tune in your slicer. Many direct-drive printers with Klipper use rotation_distance instead: new rotation_distance = old × actual ÷ requested.

FAQ

What are e-steps on a 3D printer?

The number of stepper motor steps the firmware sends to push 1 mm of filament. If it's wrong, every print is under- or over-extruded.

What are typical e-step values?

Around 93 for stock Creality Bowden extruders, around 415 for common dual-gear direct drives like the BMG or Sprite, and around 690–830 for some geared extruders. Always calibrate your own.

Should I calibrate e-steps or flow rate first?

E-steps first, with the hotend hot and extrusion slow. Then tune flow per filament.

Do I need to calibrate e-steps on a Bambu Lab or Prusa printer?

Usually not — they ship calibrated and use flow/pressure-advance calibration in the slicer instead.
